Description:
The Art Text Wall at MassArt is one of those designed fabrications that challenges a thoughtful viewer to ask “Is it art?” Fourteen feet high and longer than a basketball court, the wall is a series of panels, some made of yellow glass and others made of blue metal grating. The wall’s practical purpose, at least originally, was to separate an open-air basketball court from a parking lot. The glass panels permit an element of interest in what might otherwise have been a bleak barrier. The wall allows those on either side of it to experience changes of color intensity through variations in available sunlight, as well as to watch the changing shadows that peek through the different panels of the wall as people walk beside it. The wall was designed by James Carpenter Design Associates and installed in 2004.
