Description:
The Canadian-born Donald McKay (1810-1880) became an American designer and builder of clipper ships. He established his shipyard in East Boston in 1845, where he produced more than thirty clippers. Flying Cloud, the most famous of his ships built for speed, made two 89-day passages from New York to San Francisco around Cape Horn. The McKay Monument lists more than thirty of his ships. The monument, a granite obelisk over ten feet high, was erected by the Boston Marine Society in 1933.
