Description:
As a young man, the Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) came from France to join the patriot side in the Revolutionary War. He served on Washington’s staff, was wounded in battle, and became the enduring symbol of Franco-American friendship. In 1824 he made a return visit to the United States as a guest of the nation. The bronze plaque both commemorates the one hundredth anniversary of that visit and names the mall where it stands “The Lafayette Mall.” The bas-relief portrait bust of Lafayette is the work of John Francis Paramino. The plaque was dedicated in 1924.
