Description:
The Merchant Marine Memorial commemorates American merchant seamen who went down with their ships in wartime. The monument is a granite stele topped by the silhouette of a merchant ship sinking prow first into the ocean. The monument bears two plaques. The top one carries the seal of the United States Maritime Service and the words, “ By Their Deeds Measure Yours.” The lower plaque carries the words, “In Memory Of The Heroic Merchant Seamen Of All Wars.” The present monument is a revision of the original monument intended to honor the 170 radio officers who trained at the Maritime Service’s Gallups Island Radio Training Station, and who lost their lives in World War II.
