Description:
The Papal Mass Tablet marks the site of the first mass celebrated in America by Pope John Paul II on October 1, 1979, during his first pastoral visit to this country. The four feet tall granite tablet carries a half-figure, bas-relief portrait of the pope created by an anonymous carver from the F. P. Davis Monumental Works, Inc. The tablet is a gift to Boston from the International Order of the Alhambra, an organization of Catholic men dedicated to preserving the history of the Catholic Church in America.
