Description:
The tree, over twelve feet high, starts with a rough-hewn stone trunk that supports at its top a formal, three-part cluster of short, upright metal rods. From the rods spring three large open-work, wing-like branches shaped from heavy wire. The branches make a lacy pattern against the sky and the implied arc forms are complemented by the repeated arcs on Elmhurst Park’s red steel fence. Both the Tree of Life and the fence were designed by the sculptor Bart Shigeru Uchida. Seen together, the tree and the fence make the park a remarkable example of integrated urban art.
